What equipment do I need?

Rucsac/ Travel bag
The size of bag depends upon the length of time you will be travelling. Short trips can be fitted into a 30 to 50 litre bag, but longer trips would normally require a 50 to 80 litre bag. Some of the specialist travel bags have a detachable day sac included, and the main compartments can be padlocked for security.

Clothing
Try to keep clothing to a minimum, but you should try to take items that wash and dry quickly. Long sleeve shirts and trousers are a must for any areas with mosquitos ! Waterproofs, available in all weights and sizes, are a must for wet areas ! Keep footwear light and comfortable, and always use good technical socks ! Look to see whether your clothing offers any UV sun protection !

Sleeping
Whether you are camping or hostelling, lightweight sleeping bags and liners are very useful. Liners can be used to sleep in or on in hostels, and you can clean your own liner ! Some hostels may not be as clean as you would like !

Drinking
Always take at least one alloy water bottle, these wont break if you drop them !  Or alot of rucsacs have a space for a hydration system, but try to avoid ones with screw caps as they are difficult to keep clean.  It is also worth taking some purification tablets as the water quality can vary greatly.

Washing
Microfibre/ compact towels, they are very absorbent, quick to dry, and are a fraction of the size of a normal towel !  A washing line, small to pack, and a must for a quick wash and dry. Sounds odd, but a sink plug ! you cant always guarantee one at your destination.

Lighting
A torch or headlight is always a good idea. Not just for use at night, they can also get attention in case of emergency. Dont forget some spare batteries or a charger !

First aid
A first aid kit is a must, a small one will do for short journeys or well populated areas. A more comprehensive one is recommended if travelling in more remote conditions !

Insects
An insect repellent is a must for so many places, available in natural or chemical form. Stop those annoying bites ! Mosquito nets ensure a bite free night, also available as head nets for day use !

Useful items !
Other items that are just handy to have ! A Swiss Army knife or multi tool, just plain useful, and could save the day ! A dry bag, invaluable in any wet situations ! Survival blanket or bag, could save your life in changeable conditions ! A pen and paper, you never know when you might need to make a note of something ! A money belt, useful to hide your cash and documents !
